This week I'll look at ski resorts in North America. Winter is winding down, and it's your last chance to go out and ski! Most of the sites I found looked the same by focusing on portraying a cool image.
Abbreviations Not Effective on Roomy Pages

The Squaw Valley site looks like a ski site. "Squaw Cam" means a video camera view of the ski area, and "Cam" is taken from the David Letterman show. This phrase is very catchy (many ski sites use it), and is good for young audiences who watch David Letterman.
This page uses many abbreviations, however, when there is plenty of room to write the full word. "Race Dept" would look much better if it were written in full as "Race Department," and likewise, "incl skate rental" should be written "including skate rental." If you are limited in space, use a shorter word, or rearrange your page to allow full spellings of words that are not usually abbreviated.
I give this site a grade of C for unoriginality and too many abbreviations.
Design Defects Makes a "Cool" Site Feel "Lukewarm"

The Whistler-Blackcomb ski area's site also looks very much like a "cool" ski site, but there are a few design flaws related to English.
The links on the left of the screen are arranged along a curving line. I like this idea, but the links are not arranged by word length. Visual balance is important in English, so the longest word should be at the top, gradually moving down to the shortest word. When making your own site, consider link word length and balance.
At the very bottom of these links is the phrase "get your free vacation guide." However, the word "free" is written in a lighter print than the other words. This is, of course, a huge mistake. Important words like "free" need to be emphasized, not minimalized!
This site gets a grade of C, too.
Blackjack Connects with Viewer;
Looking "Cool" Comes Next—Or Later

Blackjack is my favorite site of the three. It is the only site I visited that made a successful attempt to connect with the viewer instead of portraying a "cool" ski image.
Paul Bunyan, a local hero folk legend, is shown snowboarding on the home page. I think this is very catchy and appropriate for a business located in Northern Michigan.
The phrases "Big Snow! Big Value! Big Fun!" on the top center of the page are not only catchy and attractive to the viewer, they match the Paul Bunyan theme, because he was said to be 10 times bigger than the normal man.
Although the page does have a few punctuation mistakes and looks less professional than the others, I give this site a grade of A- for originality, simplicity, and connecting with the viewer both visually and linguistically.
Image Should Come After Content
None of the sites I visited was very interesting, and all but the Blackjack site portrayed a "cool" skier image. A few of the sites had English mistakes that distracted from the overall image, so I picked the Blackjack site as my favorite. It was the only one that dropped the cool dude image in an attempt to connect with the viewer. Image is not always as important as content!

スキーリゾートサイトは見かけ頼り
今週は、北米のスキーリゾートサイトを見てみたいと思います。冬も終わりにさしかかってきたので、スキーに出かける最後のチャンスです。私が目にしたサイトのほとんどは"クールな"（格好よい）イメージを出すことに終始しており、どれも同じに見えました。
スペースに余裕のあるページで省略は効果なし

Squaw Valleyのサイトはスキー場サイトらしく見えます。"Squaw Cam"とは、Squawスキー場のビデオ中継映像（を見られるページ）という意味で、"Cam"はDavid Letterman（注）のテレビ番組からとられています。この表現はとてもよく目につき（実際たくさんのスキー場サイトが使用）、David Lettermanの番組を見ている若い人たちに対してはよい表現です。
（注）David Letterman＝アメリカの人気コメディアン、TVパーソナリティー。"The Late Show"という番組の司会をつとめ、辛口かつユーモラスなトークで人気。
しかし、このページでは、たくさんの単語が短縮されています。完全なつづりで表記するだけの充分なスペースがあるにもかかわらず省略しているのです。"Race Dept"は、完全に"Race Department"と書いてあったほうがずっとよく見えますし、同様に、"incl skate rental"は"including skate rental"と書くべきです。スペースが限られているのなら、より短い単語を使うか、ふつう短縮しない単語は完全なつづりで表示できるように、ページを再構成するべきです。
このサイトは、独創性がないうえに、単語の短縮が多すぎるので、C評価としたいと思います。
デザインの欠点で"クール"なサイトも中途半端に

Whistler-Blackcombスキー場サイトも"クール"なスキー場サイトらしさを出していますが、英語に関連したデザイン上の欠点がいくつかあります。
スクリーンの左側にあるリンクは、カーブ状の線に沿って並べられています。このスタイルはよいのですが、並べ方が単語の長さをもとにして決められていないのです。視覚上のバランスは英語では重要ですので、もっとも長い単語は一番上にきて、そこから徐々にもっとも短い単語へと移っていくようにするべきです。サイトを作る時には、リンクに使う単語の長さやバランスに気を配ってください。
これらのリンクの一番下には、"get your free vacation guide"という表現があります。しかし、"free"という単語がその他の単語よりも細いフォントで表示されているのです。もちろんこれは大きなミスです。"free"のような重要な単語は、扱いを軽くするのではなく、むしろ強調する必要があります。
このサイトもC評価とします。

格好よさは、二の次か、もっと後

Blackjackは、３つの中では気に入っているサイトです。私が訪れたサイトの中では、"クール"なスキーのイメージを出すかわりに、サイトを見にくる人とのつながりをうまく作ろうとして実際に成功している、唯一のサイトです。
Paul Bunyanという現地の民話伝説の英雄がスノーボードをしているようすがホームページに出ています。これはとても目につきやすく、ミシガン州北部にある会社としては適当なのではないかと思います。
上部中央にある"Big Snow! Big Value! Big Fun!"と言う表現は、目にとまりやすくて魅力的なだけではなく、このPaul Bunyanのテーマにも合っています。Paul Bunyanのからだの大きさはふつうの人の10倍だったと言われているからです。
たしかにこのページには句読点のミスがいくつかあり、他のサイトに比べてプロフェッショナル性は低いのですが、私は、独創性、簡潔性、あと視覚的・言語学的に見てサイトとアクセスする人を結び付けていることで、このサイトにはA-評価をつけます。
イメージづくりより先にコンテンツを
私が訪れたサイトのどれも、あまり面白いとはいえませんでした。また、Blackjack以外のすべてのサイトが"クール"なスキーヤーのイメージを出していました。中には英語の間違いで全体のイメージが損なわれたサイトもありました。そこで、Blackjackサイトがお気に入りとして選ばれたというわけです。サイト利用者とのつながりを作り出そうとして、格好よくお洒落なイメージを捨て去った唯一のサイトでした。イメージは、つねにコンテンツと同じぐらい重要とは限らないのです。
